Pamela Maher (Salk Institute for Biological Sciences, La Jolla, CA) and her colleagues surmised that many of these attributes could potentially be useful in treating Alzheimer’s disease, the most common type of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is believed to result from dysregulation of multiple cellular systems; therefore, compounds that can target multiple pathways may hold greater therapeutic promise than compounds with more restricted activity.
